Country Context

Afghanistan is facing a complex and protracted humanitarian crisis shaped by decades of conflict, economic collapse, environmental shocks, and recently, a massive influx of returnees from neighboring countries. While large-scale conflict has declined in recent years, many families still struggle to meet their basic needs. Livelihoods remain unstable and access to essential services like healthcare and education is uneven, particularly for women and marginalized groups. The result: nearly half of Afghanistan’s population (about 21.9 million people) require humanitarian assistance to survive.
Recurring natural disasters, including droughts, floods, earthquakes, and harsh winters, exacerbate these challenges, repeatedly displacing families and undermining their ability to recover. At the same time, Afghanistan is experiencing the return of nearly 5 million people from neighboring countries over the past two years alone, straining already limited resources and infrastructure. Needs across the country remain high, spanning food security, healthcare, shelter, and long-term support to help families rebuild their lives.

Our Work in Afghanistan

Human Appeal has been working in Afghanistan since 2022, providing vital support to communities in need in coordination with local partners and authorities. Our work focuses on meeting urgent needs while helping communities rebuild their lives with dignity. Through interventions spanning food security, livelihoods, water and sanitation, and healthcare, Human Appeal works to ensure people can access the essential services they need to survive and begin to recover from ongoing crises.

In response to emergencies, Human Appeal provides immediate lifesaving aid including hot meals, hygiene kits, and medical care for people impacted by disasters and displacement. We also deliver seasonal programs, such as Ramadan food distributions, Qurbani, and winter kits, to help families get through the most difficult times of the year.

Alongside this, Human Appeal invests in long-term, sustainable solutions to help communities rebuild, such as supporting the livelihoods of vulnerable, women-headed households. These programs respond to communities’ specific needs, helping to strengthen their resilience and move toward lasting stability.
