Shelter and Settlements
Housing Crisis in Pakistan:
- The 2022 floods destroyed over 2.3 million homes, leaving millions of families homeless.
- Most homes in rural areas are made of mud and are highly vulnerable to floods and heavy rains, leading to easy collapse.
- Lack of shelter not only means losing a roof, but also losing privacy, deteriorating health, and increased disease exposure due to absence of proper sanitation.
Human Appeal Projects:
Flood-Resilient Homes:
- After the successful model of flood-resilient homes built in Rahim Yar Khan in 2011 that survived the 2022 floods, Human Appeal launched a major project in 2023 to build similar homes in the most affected areas: Dadu and Qambar Shahdadkot, Sindh Province.
- By the end of 2024, 500 flood-resistant homes were completed, benefiting over 3,500 people.
House Specifications:
Built 5–6 feet above ground to protect against floodwaters
Constructed with reinforced concrete and steel for durability
Each home includes:
- A fully equipped kitchen
- A spacious living room
- Ventilation windows
- An indoor toilet ensuring privacy, hygiene, and safe sanitation
- Electricity and lighting to meet family needs
Humanitarian Impact:
- These homes provide more than shelter; they restore stability and dignity to families after years of displacement
- They have reduced waterborne diseases and improved overall hygiene and health
Pakistan’s Health Gap
More than 62% of the population lives in rural areas where healthcare facilities and physicians are scarce. Patients often travel long distances or face unaffordable treatment costs.

The Orphan Crisis in Pakistan
An estimated 4.6 million orphans live in Pakistan, most under the age of 17. Many face lack of education, food insecurity, limited healthcare access, and fragile socio-economic conditions.
This group is highly vulnerable to poverty, exploitation, and child labor, making timely and sustainable intervention critical.
Human Appeal’s Orphan Sponsorship Program in Pakistan
Launched in 2007, the program now operates across nine regions: Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Bagh, Mansehra, Faisalabad, Tharparkar, Rahim Yar Khan, Bhimber, and Mirpur.
- Sponsorship is not only financial support, it is a comprehensive program providing:
- Coverage of school and university tuition fees
- Basic food and healthcare support
- Household stipends to address essential living needs
- Priority access to other Human Appeal programs (health, WASH, livelihoods)
The 360-Degree Model
A holistic framework ensuring comprehensive care for orphans, including education, healthcare, psychosocial support, and nutrition, while empowering their families through shelter and livelihoods programs.
Over time, the program evolved from simple cash assistance to a comprehensive model ensuring:
- Education: School kits and tuition coverage
- Health: Coverage of urgent medical cases when needed
- Psychosocial Support: Regular sessions to build self-confidence and protect children from trauma
Family - Empowerment: Prioritization of orphan households in shelter, livelihoods, and food assistance programs.

Disclaimer on Aid Delivery
Human Appeal acknowledges the significant challenges in delivering aid to Gaza due to external factors, including ongoing border closures, security concerns, and restrictions imposed by occupying forces. Despite these obstacles, we are committed to responding swiftly and decisively. When opportunities arise—such as temporary openings of border crossings—we act immediately to send in excess supplies. In addition, we work closely with local partners and suppliers within Gaza to ensure that essential goods and services are sourced internally whenever possible. This dual strategy helps us maintain a steady flow of aid, support livelihoods, and reinforce resilience on the ground.
Amina – The Girl Who Became a Doctor
Amina lost her father at the age of three, growing up in poverty and deprivation. Since 2013, she has been enrolled in Human Appeal’s sponsorship program. Through sponsorship, her family was able to meet basic needs and keep her in school. Thanks to this support, Amina excelled academically, completed her school education with distinction, memorized the entire Qur’an, and developed new skills such as graphic design. Today, Amina is a medical student at one of Pakistan’s most prestigious universities. “Your sponsorship was more than financial support—it was security, stability, and hope at a time when we had nothing but prayers. You are the reason I can now fulfil my father’s dream of becoming a doctor.”
Fawzia
Fawzia, a student at a rural school in Battagram, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, faced a daily challenge alongside her classmates: the school had no toilets.
Girls were forced to go into open fields, exposing them to snakes and stray dogs, causing many to drop out.
With Human Appeal’s intervention, in collaboration with UNICEF, safe toilets, handwashing stations, and hygiene awareness programs were established.
Fawzia became the leader of the school’s water club, teaching her peers the importance of handwashing and personal hygiene.
She smiles: “Now we have a clean and safe place… I’m no longer afraid and encourage my friends to stay in school.”
Hima – From Drought to Self-Sufficiency
Hima, a mother of five in Manani Bhil, Tharparkar, spent hours each day fetching water while her husband worked in agriculture.
Following Human Appeal’s intervention through solar-powered home gardening and water projects, she received training, tools, and seeds for a home garden.
Today, her small plot produces tomatoes, eggplants, and squash, providing nutritious food for her children and additional income from surplus sales.
Hima says: “Now we eat what we grow, and sometimes we sell vegetables to buy what we need. My time is spent serving my children instead of searching for water.”
Sana – Hope After the Flood
Sana, 25, from Shahid Benazirabad, Sindh, a mother of two, had a husband working as a seasonal farmer with irregular income.
After the floods, her family lost their livelihood, accumulated debt, and she struggled to feed her children.
She joined a Human Appeal training program in partnership with WFP and FAO, learning embroidery, digital marketing, photography, social media management, and budgeting.
She received a small grant of PKR 54,000 to start her own business.
Thanks to her new skills, she began selling her products and even received orders from outside Pakistan.
Sana says: “I thought I was just a forgotten woman, but today I support my family with dignity, earning PKR 15,000–20,000 per month. The training didn’t just change my life; it gave me confidence to build a better future.”
